About American Veterinary Medical Association
American Veterinary Medical Association is a not-for-profit association founded in 1863 that represents more than 111,000 veterinarians working in private and corporate practice, government, industry, academia, and uniformed services. The AVMA serves as the nation's leading advocate for the veterinary profession, protecting, promoting and advancing the needs of all veterinarians and those they serve. The organization provides information resources, continuing education opportunities, publications, and discounts on personal and professional products, programs, and services. The AVMA organizes major events including the annual AVMA Convention which unites veterinarians, veterinary technicians, students, practice managers, and others each summer for world-class continuing education, networking, and special events. The association also hosts the Veterinary Leadership Conference and various topical continuing education meetings throughout the year. The AVMA Council on Education serves as the designated accrediting body for schools of veterinary medicine in the United States, accrediting 54 veterinary colleges with 31 being in the United States. The organization publishes the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Journal of Veterinary Research, while also maintaining educational standards for veterinary institutions to ensure the qualifications and competency of graduates. The AVMA indicates that it lobbies for animal friendly legislation within a framework that supports the use of animals for human purposes including food, fiber, research, and companionship.
